Teaching and Learning International Languages in the Curriculum for Wales

The introduction of the Curriculum for Wales has called for a more integrated approach to teaching and learning with the creation of six Areas of Learning and Experience that group together well-known disciplines and actively promote meaningful links between them. The Four Purposes underpin the Curriculum for Wales which are intended to guide both the development of the curriculum and teaching practices. The Four Purposes aim to create:

  • Ambitious and Capable Learners
  • Enterprising, Creative Contributors
  • Ethical, Informed Citizens
  • Healthy, Confident Individuals

The holistic nature of the four statements that express what matters within the Languages, Literacy and Communication Area of Learning and Experience require practitioners to bring a fresh approach to their teaching. Teachers are encouraged to explore different languages in relation to one another to equip learners with essential language decoding skills that will help them transfer their knowledge across multiple languages. The multilingual and plurlingual approach of the curriculum offers an exciting opportunity to ignite learners’ enthusiasm in language learning, for the languages that are spoken in their schools, communities and beyond. The curriculum also offers a fantastic opportunity for learners to develop their own sense of identity through exploring and understanding the relationship between their own cultures and communities and those of others.

Whilst change is exciting, it can also be very daunting, and it’s understandable that practitioners may be feeling overwhelmed drawing up and implementing their new curriculum across the age groups – that’s where MFL Mentoring can help you! We’ve created a suite of adaptable resources in English and Cymraeg that are FREE to download via our project website. These resources for upper primary and lower secondary age groups will support practitioners in delivering their new LLC curriculum and help develop learners who are ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the World. We will be shining a light on each of our resources on LinkedIn over the coming months, but if you can’t wait until then please head over to our website and download copies of all our resources now! If you’d like any further information about our resources, please get in touch @mflmentoring.
