Data Dashboard

The project undertakes extensive research into learner attitudes towards language learning to inform project design and support curriculum development as part of the Curriculum for Wales. For the purposes of this dashboard, International Languages is used used to refer to French, Spanish and German, the 3 main languages taught in schools in Wales.

The data presented in the dashboard below represents the views of learners of 12-14 years old learners in Years 8 and 9, before they make their GCSE option choices. These learners attend schools that apply to participate in the MFL Mentoring Project.  Data is presented across 5 years: 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2024, with further data collation ongoing. Data was not collated in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The collation of this data was conducted by the MFL Mentoring Project, with ethical approval from Cardiff University School of Modern Languages.

There are 8 pages of data to explore. The data is interactive allowing you to view data by individual years, by gender, or by school medium, as per the toggles available on each page. There are short descriptions of the data and some key findings on each page, but these have been kept to a minimum. Use the arrows in the bottom right of the dashboard to expand the dashboard fully – this will provide the best viewing experience.
