This is an easy-read document which explains the Multilingual Mentoring Learner Survey (this project used to be called MFL Mentoring). It can be read by learners themselves, or the teacher can read it to the learners BEFORE they fill in the survey. This tells learners how we will use their data and helps them decide if they’re happy to share information with us (consent).

What is Multilingual Mentoring?
Multilingual Mentoring is a project in Cardiff University. This project is funded (paid for) by the Welsh Government.
The project supports learners, like you, to explore different languages and cultures. We do this by organising sessions in your school which are run by a university student. We also do this by learning more about young peoples’ attitudes towards languages.
Understanding what you think and feel about international languages (international languages are languages like French, German, Mandarin Chinese, or Spanish) helps the project team understand what they need to do to make their project better (to help you).
What questions will I be asked?
The survey will ask for your name, ethnicity[1], gender, school and year group (this is your personal information). You can choose ‘Prefer not to say’ if you don’t want to tell us your gender or ethnicity. All other questions are about international languages and other subjects you learn and enjoy in school.
The questions are short, sometimes you pick the answers that fit you, and other times you can write what you think in your own words. This is not a test, there are no right or wrong answers, and nobody is going to check your spelling. Please give answers that are most true for you right now.
What will you do with my answers?
The project team will look at your answers and see if other learners say similar things about learning languages.
Multilingual Mentoring will only share your personal information (like your name, gender, ethnicity, school) with your schoolteacher. Multilingual Mentoring may share some of the things you said anonymously (this means without telling anyone names, school or age), with the other organisations they work with, in their reports, or on their website or social media. No one will know these answers came from you.
Who gets to see what I say?
The only people who get to see everything you say in the survey are your teachers in school and the Multilingual Mentoring team at Cardiff University.
The project might use your answers in their reports, or social media – so more people might see that, but they will never share your personal information – like your name, gender or ethnicity.
Can I say no/choose not to answer the questions?
Yes, you can say no. If you decide you don’t want to answer these questions, you don’t have to. You can also change your mind afterwards. If you change your mind, tell your teacher and they will email us at mflmentoring@cardiff.ac.uk. Multilingual Mentoring will remove your answers from their record.
